From the 1941 state capitol of Yreka, California, take Hwy. 263 North over five Pioneer bridges to Hwy. 96. Meander along the Klamath River West to the remote, friendly town of Happy Camp. Seek the headwaters of Indian Creek northwards over the 5000-foot Grayback summit, through old Brewers Spruce forests, and then down to Hwy 199 in O'Brien, Oregon.
Navigating the Byway:
Take the North Yreka exit off I-5 to Hwy 263. Go north to the Klamath River. Proceed along Hwy 96 West to Happy Camp. Go north up Indian Creek Rd. to Hwy 199 just West of Cave Junction, Oregon. From 101 north of Eureka, take Hwy 299 to Willow Creek, and then Hwy 96 through the Hoopa reservation to Happy Camp. This route is stunning but can be closed temporarily due to rockslides. It also adds 2.5 hours to the trip.
