In a world struggling with mental health and well-being, and controlled by those who seem to lack empathy and heart, how do we ever achieve any form of the elusive ‘world peace’? “Society’s destiny rests on how it treats its children.” – Robin Grille Let’s start with “childism”. This is prejudice against children in which it is socially acceptable for adults to treat children in disrespectful ways, in order to gain control of them. It’s also the idea that having control of your children is a sign of successful parenting. Yet when parents focus on control, manipulation, punishment and shame, or resort to other more aggressive if not violent forms of communication, inevitable problems occur. In short, children begin to develop an identity around feelings of failure and worthlessness, which contributes to the ever increasing rates of depression, anxiety and self-harm among our young people. In other words, childism is basically a socially accepted form of bullying. Children who have these experiences, will often feel the need to bully others in their life, to gain back the control they lose at home. It’s a vicious cycle. Once we accept the radical idea that children also deserve respect, we can begin to make positive changes in our own homes. Peace at home has the potential to infect the world with happiness. Never doubt the power of a peaceful home. Five suggestions for peaceful and positive communication with children: Respect The most basic human right. Think about what you say to your children. If it’s not respectful to say (or do) to your closest adult friends, it’s also not okay to say (or do) to your children. This means; acceptance of your children by allowing natural growth and development, not trying to force them by use of manipulative or punitive measures. Let them look up and see inspiration, not intimidation. Respect them so they know what respect feels like. Respect yourself so they know what self-respect looks like. Empathy The ability to see life from your child’s perspective. Children want and need to feel heard and understood. If you can learn about their level of development and learn to understand their behaviour, emotions and needs, this will have the most positive outcome in your relationship. By being empathetic with your children, not only will they develop empathy, they will learn to understand people instead of judging them. Empathetic people feel and think — and that’s just what this world needs more of. Connection Our modern world finds endless ways to be entertained and kept busy through the use of technology, however, nothing can replace the connection and affection of a human being. Quality time together, even just 5 to 10 minutes a day, helps us reconnect and feel valued. When we truly connect with someone, respect and compassion is naturally, unavoidable. Comfort Everyone feels comfort in their own way. A good start is to listen and acknowledge your child’s emotions and remember all emotions are valid because behind every challenging behavior, is a need. Show empathy, even if you don’t understand or agree with them completely, because what they’re feeling is very real for them. Offer comfort and respect their response; not everyone feels like a hug in the middle of an upset and that’s their choice. Self-accceptance If we don’t get the chance to be ourselves during childhood, to develop self-worth and self-respect, we might spend our entire adulthood searching for it. Your personal growth is just as important as your child’s growth. Treat yourself with the same gentleness, understanding and respect, that you would treat your child with. Children don’t ask for perfection; they want happy parents to journey with. The best way for children to learn any of these qualities is by seeing us modelling them, living them, being them, and normalizing them in every relationship, including the one with ourselves. Albondigas is a Mexican soup that is traditionally made with meatballs and tomato broth, and it’s considered a classic comfort food. Here, we make wheat balls with ground seitan and peppers and a light roasted tomato and vegetable broth. It makes a beautiful starter for our Cinco de Mayo celebration. Serves 8 to 10 Ingredients 1 pound plum tomatoes, or 1 (14-ounce) can fire-roasted tomatoes with juice 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup diced yellow onion 1 cup steamed corn kernels 1 bay leaf 11/2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1 teaspoon sea salt 4 cups vegetable broth or water 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro, to garnish Wheat Balls 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more to brush 1 white onion, diced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 poblano pepper, seeded and diced 1 pound seitan, drained and cut into 1-inch chunks 1/3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1/3 cut dried bread crumbs 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro, plus additional to garnish 1 tablespoon sea salt Directions Preheat the oven to 350°F. If you are using fresh tomatoes, put them in a roasting pan and roast until softened, about 30 minutes. Remove and let cool. Peel the tomatoes, transfer to a blender, and blend until smooth. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and corn and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, bay leaf, paprika, and salt. Add the broth and simmer until reduced a bit, 20 to 30 minutes. Remove the bay leaf. The soup can be made ahead of time up to this point. Reheat the soup before serving. To make the wheat balls, preheat over to 300°F. Oil a rimmed baking sheet. Heat the olive oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and poblano pepper and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool. Put the seitan in a food processor and process until completely ground. Transfer to a large bowl and stir in the flour, bread crumbs, cilantro, and salt. Add the onion and pepper mixture and stir to combine. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and put them on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with olive oil and put 3 tablespoons of water on the baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until lightly browned, and then remove from the oven. To serve, arrange two wheat balls in each soup bowl and pour the warm tomato soup over them. Garnish with cilantro and serve. At one point, sis even bends over and grabs at his arm, but DDG just hits a quick lil’ arm roll dance and keeps it pushing. That’s not all, Roomies! She claims the athlete needs to “learn to respect boundaries and to place the baby’s needs over his own impulses and desires.” Additionally, Vaccaro is also asking the court to block Hill from leaving Florida with Capri without notice. Tyreek Allegedly Threatened To Take Capri Out Of State To “Piss Her Off” In her court docs, Vaccaro recalls an incident on Thursday, May 1, when the Georgia native pulled up to their former marital home to pick up Capri. According to Vaccaro, Hill threatened to “really piss her off” by making the sudden decision to take Capri to Los Angeles. According to FOX Chicago, Smollett was supposed to appear in court on Wednesday, May 1, but his attorney confirmed his client had settled the case in a docket entry. The deal details have not been publicly disclosed, as both sides have requested additional time to finalize the paperwork. This comes after the Illinois Supreme Court, on November 21, 2024, threw out Smollett’s 2021 conviction for five felony disorderly conduct charges. In a 5-0 vote with two justices sitting out, the court said retrying him was unfair because he had already made a deal with prosecutors. He gave up a $10,000 bond in that deal and did 16 hours of community service. In return, the ruling erased his 150-day jail sentence, 30 months of probation, and $120,106 in fines. Smollett will face his next court status hearing on May 29, where he and the city will likely finalize their agreement. An unmissable appointment for those who loved the legendary Fiorucci store in Milan, the Elio Fiorucci exhibition has just opened and will remain at the Triennale Milano until 16 March 2025. To all intents and purposes, it is a chronological but also an emotional journey, curated by Judith Clark with exhibition design by Fabio Cherstich. The exhibition is the largest and richest in works and documents ever dedicated to Elio Fiorucci and proposes the various stages of the creative genius of such a multifaceted figure: a brilliant entrepreneur, the very first cool hunter and the founder of the brand that revolutionised costume, fashion and the contemporary art scene in Italy from the 1960s onwards. The exhibition is proposed as a retrospective with a clear biographical intent, encompassing the human, entrepreneurial and cultural vicissitudes of Elio Fiorucci, taking a new look at his figure. It also presents the research developed by academics and collaborators, recounting Fiorucci’s unique vision and a series of experiments that revolutionised Italian and global fashion and marketing. The exhibition focuses in particular on the designer’s life and biography. Following a chronological order, materials from his personal archive as well as industrial products are presented, recounting Fiorucci’s unmistakable aesthetic. The exhibition design emphasises the theatricality of the different parts that make up the story: the entire exhibition is traversed by Elio Fiorucci’s voice – rendered through hitherto unpublished recordings – which retraces some personal moments and is set in dialogue with the voices of other protagonists of the stylist’s history, creating a narrative that is interwoven with the brand’s story. Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves are finally reuniting for a new movie, Us Weekly can confirm. Bullock and Reeves, both 60, will be starring in a “propulsive romantic thriller” from Amazon MGM Studios. Screenwriter Noah Oppenheim, who previously penned films Jackie and The Maze Runner, will write the script. No additional details of Bullock and Reeves’ new project have yet to be shared. The last time Bullock and Reeves worked together was on the 2006 romantic drama The Lake House. Before that, they costarred on the 1994 thriller Speed. Sandra Bullock Wants to Work With Keanu Reeves Again Before She Dies Last year, Bullock and Reeves attended a special 30th anniversary event for Speed in October 2024. The pair got together to reflect on their time working on the action film that took place on a bus. “We knew we were doing something wacky,” Reeves said of the film’s plot while Bullock joked, “I was behind the wheel of a projectile, so I was just happy to be alive at the end of the day. Bullock and Reeves formed a fast friendship on set. So we spoke with celebrity stylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor (of Deeper Than Hair fame), whose portfolio boasts major names like Keke Palmer, Tiffany Haddish and more. Harry, 40, started out by thanking his legal team and the judges in the lengthy statement released via his and wife Meghan Markle’s official website. “This process has only ever been about ensuring my safety and that of my immediate family when we are in the United Kingdom, so that we may safely visit my home country with the same level of security that other governments deem necessary for our protection,” he wrote, in part. “My ask has been simple: that the standard protocols for security and risk assessments be applied to me in the same way they are to others — including people who have never carried out any public functions on behalf of the State.” Harry noted that the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) “failed to follow its own mandated processes” for him and his family. “Given my profound concerns over this issue, I will be writing the Home Secretary to ask her to urgently examine the matter and review the RAVEC process,” he continued. “This legal action has been a last resort, but one that has uncovered shocking truths, starting with the fact that the Royal Household are key decision-makers on RAVEC and my sole representation for matters regarding my safety.” Harry noted that he “has learned the names” of those involved with this decision making. The Duke of Sussex also stated that RAVEC can call for an assessment at “any point” but hasn’t. “The only possible conclusion that can be drawn is they choose not to, because they know the outcome would prove that my security should never have been removed in the first place,” he added, noting elsewhere that a “basic duty of care” had not been applied to him in this situation. “It’s true that I have been treated as an exception on this issue. Harry, 40, lost his appeal in the ongoing battle to reinstate government-funded security in the U.K. on Friday, May 2. Judge Sir Geoffrey Vos dismissed the appeal, noting that two other judges agreed with his decision. “The Duke was, in effect, stepping in and out of the cohort of protection provided by RAVEC [the government’s Royal and VIP Executive Committee],” the judge said in his decision on Friday, according to multiple outlets. “Outside the U.K., he was outside the cohort, but when in the U.K., his security would be considered as appropriate depending on the circumstances. It was impossible, I said in my judgment, to say that this reasoning was illogical or inappropriate. Indeed, it seemed sensible.” Us Weekly has reached out to the Duke of Sussex for comment. Prince Harry Plans Appeal After Losing Fight for U.K. Police Protection Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, lost their security detail after they stepped down from their royal duties and moved out of the U.K. in 2020. The couple’s security measures have been decided on a case-by-case basis since their move to the United States. The Duke of Sussex spent two days at London’s Royal Courts of Justice last month to appeal a decision made that same year, stating that he and Meghan, 43, would no longer receive state-funded protection. His music is so radical.” A pioneer of surrealist cinema, Lynch died after going into cardiac arrest on January 16 shortly after he evacuated from his Los Angeles home due to the Southern California wildfires. Max has plenty of them, so it’s hard to choose which ones are right for you. Watch With Us is here to recommend three of the best under-the-radar films worth your attention. One’s an action rom-com starring a former Batman villain, another is a searing drama about a grieving mother and the final selection is a medieval horror movie starring an Oscar-winning actor. ‘This Means War’ (2012) What happens when two best friends fall in love with the same woman? That’s the basic plot of This Means War, but the action/rom-com changes the conventional meet-cute narrative by making the two men, Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR (Chris Pine), spies who use covert intelligence to gain the upper hand in love. The object of their affections is Lauren (Reese Witherspoon), an executive who has no clue about their real identities. But when an enemy of theirs kidnaps her, Tuck and FDR must put aside their rivalry long enough to save Lauren — and maybe prove to her that each man is worthy of her affection. 3 Underrated Hulu Movies to Watch This Weekend (May 2-4) This Means War was a critical and commercial disappointment when it was released in 2012, but it’s aged well over the years. The action is slick (the movie was directed by Charlie’s Angels helmer McG) and the central love triangle between Hardy, Pine and Witherspoon has enough spark to last throughout the film’s brisk 97-minute runtime. It’s no rom-com classic, but fans of The Fall Guy and Knight and Day should check it out. This Means War is streaming on Max. ‘In The Fade’ (2017) Katja (Diane Kruger) has every reason to be angry. Her husband and 6-year-old boy were killed in a nail bomb explosion and she knows the people who did it. But she soon discovers that the law is no help in bringing justice to her family’s killers. Fueled by grief, she decides to track them down herself to avenge their deaths. Will she find salvation, death or both? In The Fade sounds like a female Death Wish, but it’s more somber and meditative than that 1974 classic. Katja’s transformation from a happy mother and wife to a gun-happy vigilante is often painful to watch and involves her taking drugs and contemplating suicide to dull her pain. As Katja, Kruger gives her best performance ever playing a sympathetic character who does some very bad things. Be warned — the film’s gut-punch ending will take a while to recover from. In the Fade is streaming on Max. ‘Black Death’ (2010) Sean Bean is primarily known for three things: The Fellowship of the Ring, Game of Thrones and dying a lot in dozens of movies and TV shows over the years. We won’t say what happens to him in Black Death, a medieval action-horror movie involving magic, romance and the Black Plague, but it’s no spoiler to reveal he plays a gruff, monotone hero named Ulric who must protect an innocent in need of his help. What to Watch This Weekend: 22 Great New Movies on All Streaming Services That innocent is monk Osmund (Eddie Redmayne), who is looking for his lost lady love Averill (Kimberley Nixon). Ulric agrees to protect Osmund in exchange for the holy man’s assistance in finding a travel route untouched by disease. As the two men encounter crazed townspeople, aggressive soldiers and evil necromancers, they realize their partnership may not be enough to survive the journey. Black Death is one of those movies you find on cable late at night and can’t help but watch. Yes, the plot is silly, but it’s also an effective B-movie that delivers on its titular promise. There’s death aplenty in Black Death, and we’re all the better for it. Black Death is streaming on Max.
