Highlands Scenic Byway

This National Forest Scenic Byway weaves through a landscape of diverse vegetation, scenic views, unique geological formations and an abundance of wildlife. In addition, there are numerous historic places-the remnants of a once thriving mining community.

Navigating the Byway: Driving the Byway Approximately 20 miles west of Lexington, the Highlands Scenic Byway is accessible from I-64 at exit 43. Head south on Forest Road 447 to begin your tour of the byway. Follow Forest Road 447 until you reach State Highway 654. Continue along State Highway 654 until you reach Collierstown Road. Continue driving on Colliertown Road until you reach North Mountain Road. Turn right onto North Mountain Road, which will take you underneath I-64. Drive northeast on North Mountain Road until you return to Forest Road 447.
