Brown rice syrup is a commonly used ingredient in macrobiotic cooking, but as this article explains, people from all walks of life are starting to discover it. If I need a sweetener, brown rice syrup is always my first choice. It is still a sweetener so it’s not a healthy food and you shouldn’t go out of your way to eat it, but when you need a sweetener, it’s the best choice. Brown rice syrup raises your blood sugar, but doesn’t make you crash the way other sweeteners do. Because it’s a complex carb, it delivers a more mellow taste that still satisfies your sweet tooth. Every other sweetener, except maybe stevia, makes me feel like I’m jacked up. My heart pounds, my head hurts, and then I crash… it tastes great, but then I feel terrible. Brown rice syrup is gentle on me — and I am very grateful. (Check out page 68 ofThe Kind Diet for more info about how brown rice syrup is made.) I love to make a sweet kuzu drink with brown rice syrup and Bear loves it too. It’s very relaxing and has a subtle sweet taste. If I’m feeling frisky and am craving something wild, this sweet kuzu drink satisfies my sweet craving and takes the edge off so I don’t need a full-on dessert. Hot Sweet Kuzu Drink: Inredients: 1 tsp kuzu 1-2 tsp brown rice syrup Directions: In a cup, add about 2 Tbsp. of water to the kuzu and stir it until it dissolves. Add water to this mix to fill the cup, about 1 cup of water or a mug-full. Pour into a small pot and heat on medium, stirring constantly, until the liquid becomes translucent. Add the brown rice syrup and continue stirring until it dissolves. Pour back into your mug and then drink it hot. Here are some other ways I like to enjoy brown rice syrup: In my Crispy Peanut Butter Treats with Chocolate Chips (page 184 in The Kind Diet) In the topping for my Peach Crumble (page 194 in The Kind Diet) In my Mom’s Granola recipe (page 201 in The Kind Diet). This is a seriously yum dessert! In my Mochi Waffles and Pan-Fried Mochi – this is one of my favorite superhero snacks! It’s also a great breakfast option, especially for kids, athletes, breastfeeding mamas, and pregnant ladies. Plus, it’ssupertasty! In my Candied Ginger Pears and my Plum Soup (page 280 in The Kind Diet) – both delicious superhero desserts.

Fall is such a wonderful time of year. The changing leaves (even here in Los Angeles!), the smell of cooler weather in the air, warming soups, seasonal veggies, and those special family gatherings. And who doesn’t love a fashion season of forgiving oversized coats and sweater dresses? Yes, please. But how do you prepare for the cooler season? Can a macrobiotic diet help? Before you go nuts over pumpkin spice lattes (but not at Starbucks!) and holiday cocktails this year, these are some of my favorite macrobiotic tips to help prepare yourself for a happy, healthy autumn and winter. What is a macrobiotic diet? First things first: I talk a lot about eating a ‘superhero’ AKA macrobiotic diet—it’s a way of life for me. It may sound complicated, but it’s actually a fairly simple concept: eating with the seasons to keep things in balance. The diet—which isn’t a diet in the fad weight-loss sense—(“diet” back in the day meant a way of life) is built around whole grains, local fresh veggies, sea vegetables like nori, kelp, and dusle, and legumes and beans. You can also eat seasonal fruits, nuts, seeds, in moderation. There are more nuances to eating macrobiotic, but that’s the gist of it. Avoid the processed stuff, let whole foods fill up your plate, and see if you don’t feel better than ever. Of course, it’s also okay to have a veggie burger or pizza every once in a while, too. But when you keep your body in balance with the seasons for the most part, everything seems to just work better. Benefits of a macrobiotic diet When our bodies are healthy and in harmony with the seasons, this can mean a stronger immune system. No diet can make us germ-proof, but our immune system thrives in a healthy body. Eating a macrobiotic diet may also help improve and speed recovery time should you find yourself sick with any seasonal virus. Because a macrobiotic diet is aimed at bringing balance to the body, it may help you sleep better and more soundly, which is important if you’re fending off a virus, too. It can also help to regulate mood, especially if you struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder. And I can speak personally about the glow-up macrobiotic eating has given to my skin. Antioxidant-rich foods with high water content help keep your skin hydrated and looking good, even in the dull, dry winter weather. And when you reduce the processed, over-salted, over-sugared junk most of us love to eat, your skin will thank you, too. The Kind Diet is a great guide for how to eat for your healthiest, most vibrant self. And my ‘superhero’ section is essentially the Cliff Notes version of the macrobiotic diet so you can access it easily and deliciously! I think it’s a great entry point and there are lots of fun dishes to try, especially this time of year. How to eat Macrobiotic for autumn Ready to get started? Here are some of my favorite tips for eating macrobiotic in the autumn season. 1. Eat warming things: When the weather is cooler we need to get the warmth from the inside out. This means warm liquids packed with healthy nutrients. My favorite warming go-to soups include miso, lentil, squash, and veggie soups. You can also do creamy-based soups made with nondairy bases like soy, oat, or nut milk. For extra superhero credit, make creamy soups by puree. You don’t even need to add milk, which makes it yummy but tiny less healing. 2. Load up on the seasonal vegetables: Truth be told, this is simple to do in Los Angeles where so much is grown locally in California. But this time of year I look for all manner of squash—there are so many!—, my favorite sweet potatoes and other root vegetables like carrots and turnips. Most important though: greens. Lots and lots of dark leafy greens like collards, bok choy, and cabbage. (check out my favorite kale dish here). 3. Embrace grains: Ready to ditch the carbs-are-bad myth once and for all? Carb-rich whole grains support gut and heart health and boast vitamins and minerals crucial to keeping your immune system working properly. This time of year it’s great to eat short grain brown rice, whole grains like millet, barley, and oats. 4. Beans, beans!: Legumes and beans are so good for our bodies and the planet. Lentils, for example, are heart-healthy for us—and the soil as they’re nitrogen fixers. Make hearty lentil soups, a lentil loaf or burger, or serve alongside steamed greens and rice for a deliciously warming meal. And be sure to check out all of the other great beans. Make delicious hummus from garbanzo beans, pintos for refried in tacos or burritos or quesadillas. 5. Seaweed: Seaweed is some of the most nutrient-dense food available. It is loaded with minerals from the ocean and brings so much flavor and umami to any meal. This time of year I love to sprinkle toasted nori on soup and rice, add dulse to stews, or make a kanten pudding. (You can try mine here. It’s made with late summer strawberries but you can swap to autumn fruits like apples or pears.) 6. Eat for your mood: Is the coming chill of winter causing anxiety? Are you feeling sad or stressed? There are some foods that may help. Try millet with garbanzo or aduki beans, carrots and squash or a kuzu recipe (try my kuzu tea here) to help calm and soothe stress and anxiety. For a seasonal mood boost, try miso soup, brown rice, lentil, tofu, steamed greens, toasted seeds, ginger, onion, or cooked seasonal fruits like stewed apples. I wanted to remind all of you about the Millet and Sweet Vegetable Porridge recipe in my book (page. 288). It’s just so good, so healing, and a great breakfast dish. It’s really good for you, especially during the colder months of the year; it is the perfect way to start off your day. I want to encourage all of you who haven’t tried this one yet to make it. It’s such a healthy superhero breakfast dish… so nourishing and yummy. The best part about it is that it tastes just as good (if not better) when you eat it as leftovers a day later. I usually make one batch and it feeds me for 2-3 days in a row. I prefer to make it with big chunks of Kabocha squash, almost inch-wide cubes, because I like it when the squash is big and chunky (it says “bite-sized pieces” in the book…oops!). But if you’re not into chunky veggies, you can use smaller pieces of squash. Either way, it’s delicious! Millet and Sweet Vegetable Porridge Serves 6-8 Ingredients 1-inch piece kombu 1 yellow onion, finely diced 2 stalks celery, finely diced 1 cup finely diced kabocha or butternut squash 1/2 cup yellow millet 2-3 teaspoons white miso 2-3 scallions, white and green parts, thinly sliced on the diagonal Instructions Layer the kombu, onion, celery, squash and millet in a soup pot Genty add 5 cups of water to the pot, cover, and bring to a boil Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the vegetables are tender and the millet is creamy (about 35 minutes) Place the miso in a small bowl Stir in a few tablespoons of the cooking liquid to dissolve it, and stir the miso back into the porridge Simmer gently, uncovered, for 3-4 minutes to avoid destroying the miso’s enzymes Serve sprinkled with scallions Enjoy!

The rapper was apparently visiting a DTLR shop in the mall and even sat down for an interview at the store. Subsequently, the reporter who sat for the conversation with Minaj apparently took to Instagram afterward. The reporter — whose Instagram handle appears to be @fadamgotdajuice2 — shared a clip of their conversation. Furthermore, he even replied to one comment wishing him congratulations on the opportunity to chat with Minaj, writing, “she ducked the smoke on the question man… I had to take the shot though.” In the clip the reporter appears to refer to, he’s seen asking Minaj if she foresees there ever being “real, true unity… amongst our people.” In response, Minaj asked the reporter if there’s “unity amongst human beings” and seemingly explained that it’s unlikely to think billions of people are “going to get along with each other.” “Ain’t nobody gon’ always get along with everybody!” Minaj explained. Furthermore, Minaj appeared to catch the reporter’s social media comment following their sitdown. In response, the rapper shared a spicy response. I know you do… PF3 is about to do PRECISELY wtf BEEN needed to be done. TRUST ME BARBZ. IM SO EXCITED. NBC News reports that gunshots were fired while Trump was on his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday (Sept. 15). Per NBC News, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw informed reporters that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office received a call about gunshots near Trump’s golf course around 1:30 p.m. Law enforcement officials confirmed that U.S. Secret Service agents fired their weapons after a member of Trump’s Secret Service team spotted the armed suspect. An eyewitness saw the suspect fleeing the scene in a black Nissan. Authorities found an AR-style rifle with a scope and a GoPro camera in the bushes. Martin County Sheriff’s Office road control unit later identified and matched the individual’s vehicle and license plates. “The suspect’s demeanor, I would describe as having a relatively calm, flat affect; he was not displaying a lot of emotions, never asked, ‘What is this about?'” Snyder stated. On July 13, authorities identified a suspect who tried to take Trump’s life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The West Wing‘s Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney and Richard Schiff were tapped to present Outstanding Drama Series at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15, reuniting ahead of the show’s milestone 25th anniversary. The audience cheered as the actors appeared on stage in a mock Oval Office, with Sheen, 84, sitting behind the president’s desk. “From 1999 to 2006, I had the honor of playing the President of the United States on an extraordinary series created by Aaron Sorkin and produced by John Wells,” Sheen began. Hill, 49, chimed in, adding that it was an “honor” to serve in the fictional administration of The West Wing. “It’s hard to believe that just 25 years ago, Aaron and the writers actually had to use their imaginations to create interesting plot lines for The West Wing,” Janney, 64, teased before announcing FX’s Shōgun as the category’s winner. 2024 Emmys Red Carpet Arrivals The West Wing premiered in September 1999 and ran for seven seasons, ending in 2006. Created by Aaron Sorkin, the show followed the senior staff working under President Jed Bartlet (Sheen) and the eventual campaign to elect his successor, Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits).
