They pile on the meat, fish, eggs, or cheese, trying to avert an imaginary lack of protein. Of course, the body needs protein to build and repair body tissues. But protein is widely available in our diets even without meat; you can find it in beans, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and grains. It is almost impossible to not get all the protein you need on a healthy diet — even without eating meat, dairy, or eggs. Here are the numbers: An average woman needs about 46 grams of protein per day; the average man about 56. If a person were to eat nothing but broccoli for a day, a 2,000-calorie diet would provide a whopping 146 grams of protein. Yes, green vegetables are loaded with protein. A person eating only lentils would get even more — 2,000 calories’ worth of lentils pack 157 grams. Of course, no one would eat only broccoli or only lentils, and it is much better to combine foods — beans, grains, vegetables, and fruits — to get complete nutrition. The average American typically consumes too much protein, according to the CDC, with most people getting nearly double the amount they actually need. And more isn’t better. When protein comes from animal products — which are high in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol — diseases like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease often follow. So how much protein do you need? You can calculate your daily requirements using this calculator, which provides recommendations based on the American Dietetic Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization. Achieving sustainable weight loss takes a more nuanced approach to your diet than “calories in, calories out.” The reality is that you need to eat the right foods (fresh produce, legumes, nuts and seeds, and intact whole grains), avoid the weight gain-promoting substances (salt, oil, sweeteners), and address food addiction to achieve excellent health and optimal weight. I designed my Nutritarian diet to include a wide portfolio of protective plant foods, which supply a full spectrum of phytonutrients. This eating style is hormonally favorable, offers the full portfolio of anticancer superfoods, and maximizes the number of micronutrients per calorie. Let’s take a look at some of the healthful plant foods that make up the Nutritarian diet and how they promote weight loss. Leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables High in nutrients, low in calories, these foods take up room in the stomach, leading to a feeling of satiety. They are also rich in fiber, phytochemicals, and micronutrients, and very low in calories. Put it into action: Eat three or more of these every day: Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cabbage, collards, and watercress: salad greens, such as lettuce, arugula, and spinach; alliums such as onions, garlic, and scallions; bell peppers, eggplant, asparagus, zucchini, etc. Start your meal with a salad When it comes to salad, the bigger, the better. Studies have found that eating a salad at the start of a meal reduces calorie intake from the meal by blunting your appetite and improving the satiety value of meals. Women who started their lunch with a salad consumed fewer calories from the rest of the meal. The larger the salad, the fewer calories they consumed at lunch.1, 2 Put it into action: To your lettuce, add some tomatoes, sliced red onion, shredded carrots, and some raw cruciferous like arugula, radishes, or cabbage. Your choice of dressing is important. Including fat in your salad makes the salad more filling and helps your body absorb carotenoids from the raw vegetables. But whole food fat sources – nuts, seeds, and avocado – are superior to oils. Keep reading to learn how nuts and seeds promote a healthy weight. Beans are filling and low-glycemic Looking for the best starchy food? Beans, lentils, and split peas are especially high in indigestible carbohydrates (fiber and resistant starch). They slow the absorption of sugars from a meal, and reduce the elevation in glucose and insulin following the meal. Plus, these indigestible starches provide sustenance for the beneficial bacteria of the gut microbiome.3 Beans promote satiety, helping to reduce total calorie intake, and studies suggest beans in one meal can even blunt the blood glucose response of the next meal.4, 5 An analysis of 21 randomized controlled trials on bean or lentil containing diets vs. a diet with the same number of calories but no beans found the bean groups lost more weight than the control groups.6 Whole grains often get more attention, but beans are more healthful than whole grains. A dietary intervention study directly comparing the two in patients with type 2 diabetes found beans were superior to whole grains for improving body weight and cardiovascular risk factors.7 Put it into action: Variety is the spice of life, so broaden your mealtime horizons by experimenting with different varieties of beans. Choose from adzuki beans, black beans, cannellini, chickpeas, edamame (and dried soy beans) green peas, lentils, kidney beans, Navy beans, pinto beans, and white beans. Mushrooms will grow on you One way to cut calories effortlessly is to add mushrooms to your daily diet. In the lab, mushroom phytochemicals inhibit human enzymes that digest carbohydrates, which could reduce calorie absorption.8 Studies also suggest that mushrooms increase satiety; that when people replace meat with mushrooms in their meals, they do not compensate by eating more calories from other foods.9 Here’s an example: A one-year-long clinical trial of 73 obese adults instructed half to replace all red meat with mushrooms, and the other half to follow a standard weight loss diet. The mushroom group had lower calorie intake, lost more weight, and lower BMI, waist circumference, percent, body fat, and blood pressure compared to the standard diet group.10 Put it into action: Mushrooms add a depth of savory flavor – known as umami – to dishes. Branch out from the usual white button variety and try chanterelle, cremini, maitake, oyster, porcini, portobello, reishi, or shiitake. Berries and pomegranate Low-sugar, high-antioxidant fruits like berries are rich in anthocyanins and other phytochemicals. Berry extracts inhibit digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates and reduce glucose absorption according to laboratory studies.11, 12 Berries limited the rise in blood glucose after a meal in multiple human studies.12 For example, one study compared a blend of pureed berries (bilberries, blackcurrants, cranberries, and strawberries) plus sugar to sugar alone. In the berry group, the blood glucose response was lower and occurred more slowly, likely due to a combination of the effects of fiber and anthocyanins.13 Another study suggested consuming blueberries regularly for six weeks improved insulin sensitivity.14 Put it into action: With their rich jewel tones (courtesy of their flavonoid content), berries are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate. Buy them fresh while they’re in-season or opt for frozen (cheaper). Choose blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and pomegranate arils. Nuts and seeds Can nuts and seeds be high in calories, but still good for weight loss? Yes! Despite their calorie density, nuts and seeds do not promote weight gain. In fact, the research suggests eating nuts and seeds helps with maintaining a healthy weight. There are a few possible contributing factors: all of the calories in nuts are likely not absorbed; nuts have a high satiety value, suppressing appetite and leading to lower overall calorie intake; eating nuts may increase calorie expenditure, but this is still unclear.15, 16 In a large study of U.S. adults, those who ate nuts daily had lower BMI, waist circumference than those who ate nuts less frequently or not at all.17 Put it into action: Nuts and seeds have the added bonus that they’re linked to longevity.18 Try chia, flax, hemp, pumpkin and sesame seeds, and almonds, walnuts and cashews. Do you dream of gazing up at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, floating down the canals of Venice or wandering the streets of a medieval hilltop village in Tuscany?

Do you dream of gazing up at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, floating down the canals of Venice or wandering the streets of a medieval hilltop village in Tuscany? Italy is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, and with good reason. But what about for vegan travelers? Won’t everything be covered in cheese? Will you have to live on nuts and dried fruit the whole time you’re there, while you watch your travel companions stuff their faces with pizza, pasta and gelato? Most definitely not! Let me assure you that pizza, pasta and even gelato are all readily available in vegan versions all throughout the country. But just how vegan-friendly is Italy? Like so many things in life, the answer is, “It depends”. You see, there is so much regional variation in the country’s cuisine that you could almost say there’s no such thing as “Italian food”. Likewise, the number of vegan options also varies widely. While choices are relatively limited in the north, as you travel further south they start to multiply exponentially. This can be explained as much by the country’s geography as by its history and economy. In the mountainous regions of the north, heartier meals made of meat and dairy products were traditionally eaten to keep the chill of the Alpine winter air at bay. Whereas, in the much poorer south, “cucina povera” (peasant food) was the daily fare. The latter was (and still is) very plant-based, and meat and other animal products were used very sparingly, if at all. This is not to say that you will starve in northern cities like Milan or Turin. Far from it. Two of the most common dishes in this area are risotto (a special type of rice cooked in broth) and polenta (cornmeal boiled into a thick porridge), and both of these can easily be made vegan. Liguria – the region that hugs the coastline near the border with France – is famous for its focaccia, which is a delicious vegan flatbread that can be topped with a number of different vegetables and spices. Farinata – a savoury pancake made of chickpea flour – is another vegan speciality and a popular form of street food in the region. When navigating a menu in an Italian restaurant, you can skip right over the secondi (main dishes that are almost invariably meat-centred) and head straight for the primi (first courses), which is where you’ll find the pasta, risotto and polenta dishes. These are substantial meals in themselves, and Italians will often order just a primo without a secondo. Even if you don’t see any primi on the menu that look vegan or can be made vegan, there’s sure to be something among the antipasti (appetizers) or contorni (side dishes). For example, bruschetta (toasted bread) is a common appetizer that can be topped with chopped tomato and basil or with spreads made from artichokes, olives or truffles that are often vegan, despite the word “crema” in their name (e.g. crema di tartufo). Side dishes will almost always include vegetable options, such as a mixed plate of verdure grigliate (grilled vegetables) or a bowl of greens like cicoria (chicory) or scarola (escarole), seasoned with extra-virgin olive oil and perhaps some garlic or chili flakes. Rome lies in the center of the country both geographically and culturally, so it’s no surprise that it occupies the middle ground on the scale of vegan options. While it has its fair share of meat-based local specialities, it’s also famous for its carciofi (artichoke hearts), cooked either Roman-style (stuffed with herbs and garlic and cooked in white wine) or Jewish-style (deep-fried). And then there are the pasta dishes, such as spaghetti all’arrabbiata (a spicy tomato sauce). Another naturally vegan pasta sauce typical of Roman cuisine is all’aglio, olio e peperoncino (garlic, oil and chili peppers). But what about the pasta itself? Doesn’t pasta have eggs in it? The answer once again is, “it depends”, but there is plenty of pasta out there that is naturally egg-free. Basically, pasta can be divided into two types: pasta secca (dried pasta, the kind you would buy in a box at the supermarket) and pasta fresca (fresh pasta). Pasta secca is made from semolina, a hard form of wheat, and usually does not contain eggs. Pasta fresca, on the other hand, usually does have eggs in it, but the line can get a bit fuzzy. There are literally hundreds of different shapes of pasta made in Italy, and some of them – like orecchiette, strozzapreti and legane – are never made with eggs, even when fresh. If in doubt, just ask for pasta senza uova (pasta without eggs). From Rome, head along the Tyrrhenian coastline down to Naples, the home of the true Italian pizza. Did you know that the oldest and most traditional form of pizza is vegan?? That’s right – pizza marinara is topped with tomato, oregano, garlic and olive oil. No cheese! It remains one of the most popular types of pizza in Italy even today. Head even further south into the toes and heel of the boot (or better yet, the oddly-shaped ball being kicked by the boot, better known as Sicily), and you are in the heart of “cucina povera” territory. Here you’ll find an almost infinite number of naturally vegan pasta toppings, such as pesto sauces made from a variety of nuts and herbs. And unlike the more famous pesto alla genovese, most of these are made without cheese! You might even find that the waiter offers you a dish of breadcrumbs or crushed pistachios to sprinkle over your pasta instead of parmesan. At first glance, it looked like a straight-up horror story—guns, a snatched child, and a car speeding off. But now, prosecutors are saying the whole thing was a botched robbery-turned-hostage situation with some seriously twisted layers. According to court filings, the alleged ringleader, Corey Williams, 25, told police this wasn’t just some spontaneous crime. Williams said he and two others originally set out to rob Jamal’s mother—who he described as a “well-known drug dealer” he had seen flashing cash and “bricks of drugs” on FaceTime. The plan was reportedly to pull up to her spot, guns drawn, and hit a lick for cash and drugs. But when she didn’t show up at the crib, Williams says they pivoted and targeted Jamal’s father instead. That’s when everything spiraled into a full-blown kidnapping. Williams later admitted to demanding $100K and jewelry from the mother in exchange for the boy’s safe return. The Plot Thickens: Jamal’s Mother Taken Into Custody As this wild case unfolds, police have confirmed that Jamal’s mother, Shavon Williams, has also been arrested. While the details around why she was taken into custody remain unclear, her street reputation is coming into sharper focus. Though authorities haven’t released her official charges—or even confirmed if they’re tied to the kidnapping or separate alleged criminal activity—her name being in the mix has only added fuel to the internet frenzy. So far, no charges related to her arrest have been filed publicly. What Does Jamal Recall From Being Kidnapped? The most gut-wrenching part of this story? The voice of little Jamal himself. According to the criminal complaint, the child said a man grabbed him by the back of his shirt while he was riding his bike and tossed him into a car with three unknown people. Once inside the house where police later found him, Jamal reportedly overheard a phone call between the driver—Corey Williams—and his mom. Jamal told police that he heard his mom say she was coming to get him, but she never did. Furthermore, during a police interview, the 7-year-old reportedly teared up over her not showing up. Once Corey and his crew learned of the Amber Alert, the others involved left Jamal at Williams’ house. Corey admitted that when police arrived, he left Jamal in a bedroom while he hid in the attic of the duplex. Additionally, Corey was found with a pill, which tested positive for methamphetamine, in his pocket. What’s Next? Corey Williams is now facing multiple serious charges, including kidnapping and taking hostages. A 14-year-old also believed to be involved was arrested, and the hunt for the other suspect(s) continues. Williams was expected to make his first court appearance on July 17. Per the outlet, the meat grinder suddenly turned on while the unidentified 19-year-old was cleaning it. Furthermore, the outlet notes that the teen was part of the company’s “after-hours sanitation crew.” Per 6abc Philadelphia, other workers heard the teen shouting for help as the ordeal unfolded. They reportedly tried to turn off the machine. However, they were unsuccessful. According to the New York Post, when the officers arrived, they reportedly found the teen inside the grinder. More Details On The Fatal Incident At The Frozen Burrito Factory, Tina’s Burritos Daniel Onopa of the Vernon Police Department has reportedly asserted that there was no indication of foul play. In addition, 6abc Philadelphia notes that the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health was expected to begin its investigation into the teen’s death on Monday, July 14. Per the New York Post, although no foul play is suspected, the division is hoping to determine what suddenly triggered the meat grinder to turn on. A 19-Year-Old Walmart Employee Was Found Deceased In Oven Last Year In addition to the 19-year-old worker who was reportedly sucked into a meat grinder at the frozen burrito factory, another 19-year-old experienced a similar tragedy in 2024. As The Shade Room previously reported, in October, it was reported that a 19-year-old employee was found inside Walmart’s walk-in oven. Subsequently, the employee was identified as Gursimran Kaur. Additionally, it was revealed that her body was discovered by her mother, who was also an employee at the location. Ultimately, it was determined that Kaur’s passing was not prompted by foul play. A quiet L.A. suburb is now at the center of a very serious investigation. Authorities in California are investigating a couple, Silvia Zhang and Guojun Xuan, at the center of a growing case involving more than 20 children, surrogate mothers across the country, and serious concerns about possible abuse and misconduct. The story is unfolding in the upscale Los Angeles suburb of Arcadia — and it’s raising a lot of questions. RELATED: Alleged Suspect In Custody After Jamal White Is Found Safe Following Milwaukee Abduction Silvia & Guojun Went From One Baby To Twenty-One According to police, 15 children were removed from the home of Silvia Zhang, 38, Guojun Xuan, 65, in May. The removal was prompted after a hospital reported a 2-month-old baby with a traumatic head injury. Reports alleged that the baby was violently shaken by a nanny, but wasn’t taken to the hospital until two days later. That incident sparked a much larger investigation, eventually uncovering six more children living elsewhere. And, all believed to be legally parented by the couple. Most of the children are between 1 and 3 years old, and authorities say only one or two were born biologically to Zhang. Legal Docs, Business, And Babies Six women have since come forward, saying they acted as surrogates for the couple. However, the surrogates claim they didn’t realize others were involved at the same time. The couple told investigators they simply “wanted a large family” and provided birth certificates that appeared legitimate — some issued outside California. Records also show a company called Mark Surrogacy Investment LLC was previously registered to their address. But, the business license was canceled in June. Investigators have reportedly found more evidence indicating that children in the home may have suffered physical and emotional abuse by nannies. One neighbor described the residence as resembling a hotel, noting frequent visitors and a setup that looked like a front desk. A surrogate mother from Florida, Perla, 31, is one of the surrogates to come forward. Perla claims she was originally told that the couple only had one child and were seeking another due to infertility issues. She also claims she felt ignored and cast aside after the baby she carried for them did not survive. “I think what hurt me the most was that I feel like the baby was abandoned—and I was too,” she revealed. “It’s very devastating and really bad for these kids. It’s shocking. I knew something was wrong with my situation—I just couldn’t put two and two together.” Ongoing Case, Unanswered Questions As for what’s next — the 21 children are now in the care of child protective services. Meanwhile, authorities continue digging into the couple’s past and whether everything was done legally and ethically. The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, which removed the children, couldn’t reveal further details of this case. At this time, it’s unclear whether Zhang and Xuan have legal representation. Furthermore, attempts to reach Zhang for comment have not been successful. Currently, Zhang and Xuan are free on bond while facing felony charges of child endangerment and neglect. The FBI has joined the investigation, though formal charges haven’t been filed yet. Officials say they’re still gathering information on possible surrogacy law violations or deeper misconduct. Arcadia police Lt. Kollin Cieadlo said, “We believe one or two were born biologically to the mother. There are some surrogates who have come forward and said they were surrogates for the children.” He also added, “I’m not familiar with how the surrogacy laws work. To all intents and purposes, it is a chronological but also an emotional journey, curated by Judith Clark with exhibition design by Fabio Cherstich. The exhibition is the largest and richest in works and documents ever dedicated to Elio Fiorucci and proposes the various stages of the creative genius of such a multifaceted figure: a brilliant entrepreneur, the very first cool hunter and the founder of the brand that revolutionised costume, fashion and the contemporary art scene in Italy from the 1960s onwards. The exhibition is proposed as a retrospective with a clear biographical intent, encompassing the human, entrepreneurial and cultural vicissitudes of Elio Fiorucci, taking a new look at his figure. It also presents the research developed by academics and collaborators, recounting Fiorucci’s unique vision and a series of experiments that revolutionised Italian and global fashion and marketing. The exhibition focuses in particular on the designer’s life and biography. Following a chronological order, materials from his personal archive as well as industrial products are presented, recounting Fiorucci’s unmistakable aesthetic. The exhibition design emphasises the theatricality of the different parts that make up the story: the entire exhibition is traversed by Elio Fiorucci’s voice – rendered through hitherto unpublished recordings – which retraces some personal moments and is set in dialogue with the voices of other protagonists of the stylist’s history, creating a narrative that is interwoven with the brand’s story. The New York Times reported on Thursday, July 17, that Comey was abruptly fired by President Donald Trump’s administration one day prior. According to the newspaper, Comey was notified about her termination in a letter that cited Article II of the Constitution, which describes the powers of the president. Multiple outlets noted that the reason for the firing was not immediately clear, but one source told CNN that Maurene’s position was untenable given that her father, former FBI director James Comey, is “constantly going after the administration.” Prior to her firing, Maurene worked for the Southern District of New York on the criminal cases of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Epstein was arrested in 2019 and charged with sex trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex. One month later, he died by suicide in his jail cell at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. The Judge, Jury and Lawyers in Diddy Case Explained Epstein’s associate Maxwell, meanwhile, was arrested in 2020 and charged with enticement of minors, sex trafficking of children and perjury. Most recently, Maurene was one of the prosecutors in the Diddy trial, which began in May and wrapped up earlier this month.
