SERVES 3-5 Ingredients large daikon (roughly 1 pound but size doesn’t really matter) tablespoons shoyu 1⁄4 cup mirin 2″–3″ strip kombu Directions Slice the daikon into 3⁄4″ rounds, and place them in a skillet in a single layer. Add water almost to cover the daikon. Add the shoyu, mirin, and kombu. Bring the liquid to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to very low, cover the pan, and simmer the daikon for 30 minutes, or until all liquid has been absorbed. Keeping a home clean and picked up can get overwhelming fast. Especially if you have kids, pets, a busy job, a side hustle or you just don’t love cleaning all that much—we get it! Given what we know about how a cleaner home impacts our health and the health of our little ones, we make it a priority. However, it took us some time to figure out how to get it all done, which is why we’re so thrilled to share our five favorite cleaning hacks that can restore your sense of sanity, peace, and order… no matter how crazy life gets! 1. We learned how to habit-stack If you haven’t heard of habit stacking before, we’re about to rock your world. This simple practice makes keeping the house cleaner near-automatic, plus it can be applied to every other area of your life. Bonus: it’s a great skill to teach your kids! In a nutshell, habit stacking is a form of implementation intention that lets you piggyback new habits on old habits to make getting stuff done a no-brainer. It works by taking advantage of the strong neural networks your brain builds around existing habits or established skills. Instead of going through the time, effort, and brain training required to create a neural pathway that supports a new habit, you simply tack on your desired new habit to an established one. How is this accomplished? By creating a phrase, or list that goes something like this: When I do this, I… fill-in-the-blank. Here are a few examples of how you can use this to get more cleaning/tidying done without a lot of extra effort: “When I blow dry my hair, I clean the bathroom mirror, sink or counter.” “When I get a glass of water before bed, I also rinse out the sink to prevent impurities from building up.” “When I start the dishwasher, I scald the dishcloth and sponge to prevent the build up of germs.” “When I empty the trashes for trash day, I also clean out the fridge.” “When I go to get the mail, I sweep and tidy the front porch.” How much simpler can this get?! Try it and you’ll be amazed how it decreases the amount of cleaning chores that pile up while increasing your productivity across the board. 2. We use vacuuming as a form of self-care Since vacuuming is one of the more time-consuming (and boring) cleaning chores, we schedule it during a time we can also indulge in a podcast, audiobook or music. That way, we get some stress-relief and self care out of the deal whilst ridding our homes of dust and other toxins. 3. We’ve found ways to reduce dust Dust is one of those things that we just can’t get away from. That’s because most of it comes from our own bodies via excrement of dust mites and skin, and from our household items. It may also harbor a variety of toxins including heavy metals, VOCs, SVOCs, bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Although we can’t eliminate dust completely, there are ways to reduce it so you don’t have to dust and vacuum as much. Declutter – the less stuff you have the less dust you’ll have. There are many different ways to go about this, but we love Marie Kondo’s tried-and-true method. Use microfiber cloths – their tightly-woven fibers trap the tiniest dust particles that cotton cloths or paper towels miss Use a HEPA vacuum, which will completely remove dirt and dust instead of re-exhausting it back into the air. Wash your sheets at least once a week, otherwise they become a hotbed for dust mites. Change your air filters regularly. Experiment with changing them every 1-3 months, and consider using Filtrete filters which are not treated with antibacterial chemicals. Open your windows daily, this keeps fresh air flowing through the house which discourages the build-up of dust. Invest in a high-quality air purifier. This is especially important in bedrooms and high-traffic areas. (Get our brand recommendations here.) Don’t neglect your ceiling fans! They can rain down a ton of dust if not cleaned every couple of weeks. 4. We get rid of boxes as soon as we unpack them (or at least by the end of the day) Thanks to the explosion of online ordering, receiving packages isn’t quite as euphoric as it used to be. Sure, we’re excited to get what we ordered… but it also means we have to deal with yet another cardboard box. You could put off dealing with it by chucking it into the basement or garage. But cardboard boxes can harbor a variety of mold 2 chemicals, germs, bacteria, pesticides, insect eggs, and other toxins 3 you do not want in your home. Plus if they hang around they’ll increase dust. The solution? Deal with them right away using your handy habit stacking tip from above: “When I receive a package I… unpack, break down, recycle it and wash my hands promptly.” Note: If you’re mold-sensitive, you may wish to do this all outside. 5. We keep our cleaning caddies and tools clean and simple When kids come into the picture, you realize your old routine of tackling all cleaning on the weekends wasn’t going to work anymore. Thus, we must adopt more of a family-friendly clean-as-you-go approach. This only works well if you keep your cleaning supplies and tools organized and clean! For example, there’s no point in vacuuming your sofa with a dirty attachment or trying to mop the floor with last week’s used microfiber mop. The same goes if your cleaning supplies are all disorganized or strewn throughout the house. To avoid these hurdles, we take a few minutes to wipe down and replace our cleaning tools when we’re finished so they’re ready for us next time. We also keep a centralized cleaning caddy in the laundry room with all our Branch Basics cleaning products and extra bottles of Bathroom and Streak Free in each of our bathrooms, for easy access while bathing the kids or doing hair. A little organization on the front side makes all the difference to busy parents. You can also make sandwich cookies out of these for an extra decadent treat. Hot Apple Cider I made this for Thanksgiving last year, but it’s great for Halloween too. My hot apple cider is delicious to sip on during the cool weather. Serve it in a punch bowl on a table decorated with seasonal veggies like corn and squash. Apples are part of the “dirty dozen” list of fruits and veggies that absorb pesticides easily, so be sure to make this recipe with organic apple juice. Though she tried to hold the flannel together in some photos, that made her belly poke through even more. A few photos even show her resting her hand on the top of her stomach area. Police arrested her after surveillance footage showed their disagreement. Here’s the kiii about the arrest, though. Police are looking into how two ballot drop boxes caught fire on Monday in Portland, Oregon, and in nearby Vancouver, Washington. According to the Associated Press, the fires destroyed hundreds of ballots and seem to have been intentionally set. More Details On Ballot Boxes Fires The Portland Police Bureau reported that officers and firefighters responded to a fire in one drop box at about 3:30 a.m. They later determined that an unnamed suspect had placed an incendiary device inside. However, Multnomah County Elections Director Tim Scott said a fire suppressant inside the drop box protected nearly all the ballots. Only three ballots sustained damage, and Scott says his office will contact the voters for replacement ballots. A few hours later, in Vancouver, television crews captured footage of smoke pouring out of a ballot box at a transit center. Vancouver is in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District. Per AP, the site is expected to be one of the closest U.S. House races in the country, between first-term Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Republican challenger Joe Kent. Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey in Vancouver told The Associated Press that the ballot drop box at the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center also had a fire suppression system inside. But, for some reason, it wasn’t effective. Responders pulled a burning pile of ballots from inside the box. Kimsey confirmed that the fire destroyed hundreds of votes. The last pickup at the transit center drop box happened at 11 a.m. this past Saturday. Kimsey said their office is urging anyone who dropped their ballot off after the fire to contact the auditor’s office to obtain a new one. “Heartbreaking,” Kimsey said. “It’s a direct attack on democracy.” In response to the ballot box fires, Kimsey’s office will increase the frequency of its ballot box collection and change collection times to the evening. This way, should similar crimes happen, the ballot boxes won’t remain full overnight. Another Explosive Found Near A Drop Off Box Earlier this month, on Oct. 8, officials recovered another incendiary device on or near a ballot drop box in downtown Vancouver. It did not damage the box or destroy any ballots, police said. The FBI and other agencies have been investigating, but no updates on the case yet. For context, Washington and Oregon are both vote-by-mail states. Registered voters receive their ballots in the mail a few weeks before elections and then return them by mail or by placing them in ballot drop boxes. This isn’t only happening in Washington and Oregon. Apparently, in Phoenix last week, officials said a fire destroyed roughly five ballots and damaged others at a U.S. Postal Service station there. Erik and his brother, Lyle Menéndez, were arrested in 1990 on two counts of first-degree murder after their parents — José and Kitty — were found shot to death in their home in August 1989. Two trials resulted in Erik and Lyle being sentenced to life without parole. Both have maintained that their mother and father were physically, emotionally and sexually abusive. After the trial, Erik’s sexual orientation became a topic of conversation. “No [I am not gay]. The prosecutor brought that up because I was sexually molested and he felt in his own thinking that if I was sodomized by my father that I must have enjoyed it and therefore I must be gay,” Erik said in a tell-all with Barbara Walters from 1996. “And people that are gay out there must be sexually molested or they wouldn’t be. It was upsetting to hear, but I am not gay. But a lot of gay people write and feel connected to me.” Who Are the Menendez Brothers Married to While They're in Prison? Tammi first reached out to Erik via mail in 1993, when he was in prison but not yet sentenced. At the time, she was still married to Chuck Saccoman. I have to be physically detached, and I’m emotionally attached to Erik,” she explained to People in 2005 while Erik added in a separate interview with the outlet, “It’s not the sex you seek, but the emotional connection. There is no makeup sex, only a 15-minute phone call, so you really have to try to make things work.” Erik’s brother, Lyle, also found The One while incarcerated. He comforted me,” Tammi told People. “Our letters started taking on a more serious tone.” Timeline of Erik, Lyle Menendez's Murder Case: From Arrest to Resentencing 1997 Erik and Tammi met in-person after he was convicted of first-degree murder. Tammi recalled being “really nervous” to visit Erik in prison. “I’d only sent him a tiny, 1-by-1 [inch] picture,” she recalled to People. “But when he walked into the room, he was so full of life, he hopped down the stairs. It was like I was meeting an old friend.” Erik called his first meeting Tammi the “most beautiful experience” of his life. 1999 Tammi’s original plan was to move to Georgia, but after connecting with Erik she found a home much closer to his prison, in Sacramento. But it was the correspondence that he became a really good friend of mine and understood what I was going through and I understood what he was going through.” She continued. “And then after I met him things got more and more intense, so it’s you know through letters and your constraint to letter writing.” Erik also reflected on his bond with his wife despite the unconventional barriers between them. “Tammi is what gets me through. I can’t think about the sentence. When I do, I do it with great sadness and a primal fear. I break into a cold sweat. It’s so frightening I just haven’t come to terms with it,” he told People in 2005. “Tammi’s love was a major step in my choosing life. In 2009, some of Miranda’s colleagues sent him an email trying to gauge his interest in adapting the film. “I basically wrote back, ‘It’ll never work,’” Miranda, 44, exclusively told Us Weekly at the October 18 release party for his and Eisa Davis’ musical concept album based on the film, Warriors. “And then my brain was like, ‘Unlesssss’ … and now here we are, about 15 years later, with the whole album of 26 songs proving 2009-me wrong.” Miranda forgot about The Warriors for a while as he was a little busy writing and starring in the smash hit Broadway musical Hamilton, which opened in 2015. But the idea stayed with him. Singer Noah Kahan Totally Manifested His ‘SNL’ Musical Guest Debut “I saw this movie when I was 4 years old, so this is one of those stories I carried around with me like luggage. And as soon as I came up for air from the first few years of Hamilton … I wanted to write this,” Miranda said. “And so I was very happy Eisa agreed to write it with me.” For now, the Warriors concept album is just an album, although Davis, 53, teased that an eventual stage production is possible. Alessandra Ambrosio. After announcing her retirement in 2017, Alessandra Ambrosio made a much-anticipated return to the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway earlier this month. But not before undergoing an intensive two-week fitness and health regimen to get Angel ready. As her trainer, Ludi Delfino, exclusively shared with Us Weekly, she and the supermodel, 43, took to daily circuit training that combined a mix of one hour of resistance and weight training with 30 minutes of cardio. To boost Ambrosio’s motivation even more, the supermodel occasionally completed workouts with a friend. “It makes it a little bit more competitive and fun,” Delfino revealed. On occasion, she’d increase Ambrosio’s workouts to twice a day by adding on a barre or yoga class. As Delfino shared, Ambrosio’s goal was to look and feel her best, which meant shedding two to three pounds before gracing the lingerie-laden runway. Ambrosio’s cardio workouts consisted of either 30 minutes on the treadmill or StairMaster prior to weight and resistance training to get her heart rate up. When it came to her diet, Ambrosio limited carbs at breakfast and lunchtime. After starting the day with whole grain toast, eggs and a side of berries, Ambrosio enjoyed a serving of lean protein and lots of leafy vegetables for lunch. She also ate complex carbohydrates such as sweet potato, pumpkin or squash, which, as the trainer explained, are ideal for giving your body the energy and fuel it needs to sustain daily workouts. After her workouts, Ambrosio added more protein to her body with a shake that combined whey powder, spirulina, cacao, fresh berries and, on occasion, a single banana as a natural sweetener. For dinner, the supermodel ate more leafy greens with salads topped with olives, avocados, hemp seeds and other healthy fats, which help with brain function and also keep you feeling full, Delfino noted. See Every Look “Our goal was to burn body fat and maintain lean muscle mass,” Delfino said. “And most importantly, she needed to feel good, because when you’re working out six days a week … it’s hard on your body.” While Ambrosio and Delfino engaged in full-body workouts, they placed special emphasis on the “booty, legs and abs,” which are as essential to the success of a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as the larger-than-life angel wings. To achieve a supermodel-worthy posterior, they incorporated a mix of squats, lunges, step-ups and hinges. Ambrosio completed these workouts with ankle weights totaling eight pounds, and performed 12 to 15 repetitions on each side three times. To achieve a toned midsection, Ambrosio performed multiple planks for one minute and 15 seconds each followed by mountain climbers to work the lower abdomen while getting her heart rate up. The trick, Delfino said, is to switch things up to keep your body guessing. “You don’t want to get your muscles used to the same exercises.” During resistance training, Delfino and Ambrosio added in jump squats and jump lunges to work out the model’s glutes while also using her own body weight. She applied the same method on the stairs, taking one step before jumping the next two. Ambrosio also performed sidewalks on the Stair Master to ensure her legs and thighs looked toned from every angle. Considering VS angel wings can weigh up to 40 pounds, they also focused on strength training the upper body through both lateral pulls and rowing exercises. Outside of the gym, Delfino credited Ambrosio’s time spent playing with her two children — Noah and Anja — a workout in and of itself. “Just life, right? To combat soreness, Ambrosio indulged in regular sauna sessions, dips in the plunge pool and stretches with foam rollers to target the back. “You have to do a lot of recovery when you’re doing that much exercise,” Delfino said. Combined with intensive circuit training and cardio, Ambrosio’s hard work paid off. After walking the runway, she thanked her entire glam squad, including Delfino, gushing, “I couldn’t have done it without this girl!” Delfino said with a laugh: “Afterwards, [Alessandra] joked that she didn’t want to see me for two weeks after that.” And after two weeks of nonstop training, we’d say Ambrosio earned it.
